AERIAL WARFARE.

ANOTHER EAST COAST RAID. WOMEN AND CHILDREN KILLED. [high commissioner’’.. MESSAGE. ] (Received 10, 8.35 a.m.) London, Aug. 9, 11.5 a.m. The War Office announces that hostile airships crossed the East Coast of England early this morning, and another crossed the South-east > Coast of Scotland. The raiders did not penetrate far inland. They bombed various localities eastwards, and in several places they were engaged by our guns and driven off their objective. Three women and one child were killed and fourteen injured. They did no damage of military importance. a fullefFreport. EXTENT OF THE DAMAGE. [HIGH COMMISSIONER’S MESSAGE.] (Received 10, 11.45 a.in.) London, Aug. 9, 4.-15 p.m. The War Office reports that last night there vas an air raid, in seven to ten airships were involved, none going more than a few miles inland. | Indiscriminate destruction of pre perty was the apparent object of the , raiders. , ' Anti-aircraft guns were in action in four places. They seem to have been successful in nearly every case in driving off the raiders, one of whom was pursued several miles eastwards by a naval aeroplane. The bombs they dropped mostly fell wide of any centre of population. An exception was in a north-eastern town where one man died of shock and two women and three children were killed and twelve persons injured. In another town one man, one woman and three boys were injured. Other casualties were four houses partly burnt, windows broken, fifty ■ feet of railway torn up, a horse [ killed, and there was lesser damage i done, but none of any military importance. The Admiralty announces that this morning, under heavy tire, .an attack Wais carried . out by British naval aeroplanes on an enemy airship shed at Evere, near Brussels. • The ’ objective ’ was successfully bombarded from a height of 200 feet. Eight bombs Were observed to hit the shed and heavy volumes of white smoke were seen to issue. , Our machines returned safely.
