The secretary of the committee has received the sum of £1 11/- from Mr. John Burchanan representing a collection taken up at Makaretu for Red Cross work. A meeting of members of the lire Brigade, -e. entiy re-organised, was held on Al< -nlay night, the Mayor presiding. A draft of new rules was discussed and an animated discussion was evoked I y one debarring any single man eligible, for' military service from becoming a member. On a vote being taken the rule was included by 8 votes to 5. The membership of the brigade is 19, and the following are the office bearers: — T. AVil's (captain). L. Grenside (lieutenant). 11. Fletcher (secretary), E. Maher and J. Moroney (foremen). R. Pethrick (branchman), Harris and Pepper (hydrant men). A four-r.oomed cottage situated at Omakare, and occupied by Mr. J. Moriarty, was totally destroyed by fire on Tuesday morning. The origin of the fire is unknown.. The contents, which were also, destroyed, were insured in the State office for £75. •
