WAIPAWA.
(Own Correspondent.) Captain IL. Collett, of Trentham Camp, is spending the week end with his relatives at Waipawa and Otane. The account of the new improvements to the telephone service was read With interest here, especially that part referring to Waipawa ns being the “nerve centre” of the Hawke’s Ba.v telephone system. The number of subscribers to ‘She local bureau is now 220, and names are being continually added. It is gratifying to know that in proportion to the numbers the office holds the record. for outside calls, for the Dominion. As an illustration of the atrocious bandwriting prevailing, the following incident is vouched for as a fact. An account was submitted to a local “Celestial,” who exclaimed on reading it: “By Cli’, I read nay account all li now. All the same Chinese.”
