PERSONAL.

Mr. H. S. Moss, secretary of the Hawke’s Bav Jockey Club, left Hastings for Carterton this morning. He returns on Friday. . Mr. J. Vigor Brown was on Fridaygranted two days’ leaves of absence by the House of Representatives on account of serious illness in his family. Messrs. F. W. Williams, C. Douglas and C. Chambers, left Napier for Wellington this morning to attend the Agriculural and Pastoral Societies’ Conference.

Mr. W. Black, private secretary to the Hon. Dr. R. McNab, left Hastings for Wellington this morning. The Minister himself is paying a visit to Napier to-day. Visitors to Napier include Mrs. Jex-Blake, Gisborne : Mr. C. P. Gill, Christchurch : Mr. J. Bowies. Mohaka ; Air. Gill, East Coast, and Mr. Liddell. Gisborne. Hawke’s Bay men returning invalided by the Ulimaroa are: — Messrs. R.* C. Olsen (next of kin, C. H. Olsen, Napier), and H. Thompson (next of kin, J. Halsall, Napier). Mr. G. Flux, headmaster of the >South Wellington School since its opening in 1896, will retire at the end of July, and ex-pupils are now considering the question of a fitting presentation.

Sergeant-Major Bell, who has been in indifferent health for some little time, left Hastings for Wellington district this morning, on a month’s holiday. The following wool buyers are in Napier for to-day’s sale: —Messrs. Baker, Bink, Ferris. Tartakover, Hill, Nicols, Hargreaves. Clarke, Alvers and Denny.

The Hon. W. F. Massey has been confined to his bed with an attack of influenza since Saturday. He is not likely to be able to resume his Parliamentary duties for two or three days. The Hon. C. J. Johnston, Speaker in the Legislative Council, has received a cable intimating that his son. Capt. O. R. F. Johnston, was killed in action on 2nd'July. Captain Johnson was serving with the Middlesex regiment. —Press Association. The following passengers left Napier by coach this morning for the places stated : —Miss O’Brien, Tarawera; Mr. T. H. Birdsall, Taupo: Air. G. Proffitt, Tarawera; Airs. J. Crowther, Taupo: Airs. Cooper, Te Harato. Lieut. Harold Fitzherbert. Sussex Regiment, of Wellington, reported by Press Association cable from London to have been killed in France, was a son of the late Air. Henry Fitzherbert. who formerly practised as a solicitor in Wellington, and was later a Magistrate at New Plymouth. The death occurred at Auckland on Thursday of Air. John A. F. Grey, who for* the past twenty-five years was representative of Bycroft Ltd. Mr. Grey was well known in sporting and commercial circles in Auckland. He leaves a widow and one son (Lieut. Wynne Grey), who is now serving with the New Zealanders in France.

At the annual meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Branch of the N.Z. Educational Institute, a resolution was passed, expressing high appreciation of the work done by Mr. R. B. Holmes, late secretary and chief guide to the Hawke’s Bay Branch. Pleasing reference was made to his valuable services, during his 20 years secretaryship, and best wishes tor a long,' enjoyable retirement were extended. i . At the annual meeting of Jhe Hawke's Bay branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute, held at Napier on Saturday, resolutions were passed, expressing appreciation of the work done by Mr. H. Hill, late senior inspector of schools tor Hawke’s Bay District. Pleasing reference was made to the great services rendered by Mr. Hill during his 38 years’ services, and best wishes for many happy, enjoyable years of retirement, were extended to both Mr. and Airs. Hill. After nearly forty years of service as postmaster at Giles’ Terrace, Westport, Mr. Alexander McGillivray has resigned, and Mr. AV. Mikkelson will succeed him. When the post office was first opened at the junction of all the northern terraces it was (savs the “Westport Times’ ) a sight to see the 7000 or 8000 diggers who were in the neighbourhood coming for their mails. Those were the “good old days” when fortunes were quickly made by the lucky diggers, and as quickly dissipated by many of them. Mr. J. R. Kirk, one of Gisborne s foremost and most popular lawyers and the immediate cx-Mayor of the town, on Thursday enlisted for service with the Expeditionary Force, and passed the medical test. Air. Kirk has just been re-elected for the third time a member of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board. He was a member of the Royal Commission on Education in 1912, and topped the poll at the election of members in the North Island to the National Council of Education. Besides carrying on successfully his extensive practice he has devoted much time to public works, and will carry with him the best wishes of his large circle of supporters and friends. He holds a commission as captain.
