PAKOWHAI

The usual monthly meeting of the school committee was held in the schoolroom last night. Present: Messrs. E. Milne (chairman), I . Semroens. A. Kiddle, O. McCutcheon, and W. McLeod. A. circular was received from the Education Board requesting that July 10 be the day appointed for children’s day in connection with the appeal for Belgian children. The request was granted. The inspector’s report was read and considered highly satisfactory-—in-deed it is a credit both to the teachers and the school. The headmaster’s report was also read and approved. Owing to so much wet weather and sickness, the attendance for the past month was lower than usual. It was decided to hire labour for various works about the school. Accounts amounting to £1 7,6 were passed for payment.

Mr. H. Russell left with the Eighteenth’s for camp this morning. Hte was met recently by the residents of th® district and presented with a wristlet watch as a token of esteem.

The many friends of Mr. F. Kendall will regret to hear that his only son, Sydney, who has been seriously ill in the hospital for some time, is still very’ ill and shows no improvement. It is to be hoped that mure favourable reports wni soon come to hand.

The rainfall experienced here on Sunday evening was the heaviest known for many years, the total rainfall being 4.17 inches. Early next morning the district appeared in flood, as there was a great" quantity cf surface water lying about. The engagement is announced of Miss E. Kent, of Rathdowney, Queen’s County, Ireland, to Mr. S. Harris, of Korokipo. The Red, White and Blue Minstrels intend 'giving another concert here at an early date in aid of the Equipment Fund. The company is bigger this time and will give an entirely fresh programme. It is to be hoped that the residents will turn out again in large numbers to assist this worthy objgct
