LATE WAR NEWS.

GENERAL FRENCH’S REPORT

artillery fire flattens

TRENCHES

( Received I I. 2.::o p.m.’) London, Aug. in,

Sir John Fremh reports

North-westward of Ho<>ge and in the ruins of the village, we consol.-d-ited our gain:; from the Germans on Monday. A weak infant ry at'cwas repulsed during 1 he night.

A violent artillery engagement i,n Monday made all the trenches op the open ground southward of Hoogc untenable <m either side, and c '.laxe now slightly withdrawn the position of our line which lay southward of the village. 'This makes no material diffeiem-e in our position. The total number of prisoners we capttired hi Monday is 150.

AVriting from Gallipo.i under date June 17. to a friend in AVellington. Major Arthur G. Hume, formerly of the Wellington Garrison Artillery, says that he trusts all are doing their bit in some way or other. It is all required, every bit of it, and I hope there are indications of less youths of fighting age about the street corners, pubs, and newspaper offices, ami a little less interest in the results of football matches and horse races. It will be a bitter day for such when they find they are peacefully living on the results of their fellow kinsmen giving up their lives for duty and their country. There may be many sad hearts and sad homes, but everyone of us who are left is more than proud of those who have fallen.
