Paris learns that Captain Lauterbach. who was second in command of the Emden, escaped from internment at Singapore and has reached Batavia.

A Dutch woman resident in Germany since the beginning of the w’ar, who lias arrived in London, describes Germany as a nation hypnotised, and the women and chilaren are blinded by the conviction that tin' war is won, and is only being coni inued to make the Kaiser’s vicion- an absolutely crushing one.
The Germans are brought to this state of mental intoxication by the extraordinary methods, of official suppression and deception.

We do not, want a weak peace, which could have been obtained without this frightful war, and our annies would consider it an insult to them gallantry to acquiesce in a, weak peace 1 . “Two things are essential for peace. The first, is that our enemies must ask for it, and then experts will express their opinion on ‘What Germany wants’ as far as peace terms are concerned. Lntil then-we must, fight and. above all, remain united.”
