HOCKEY
NOTES BY’ • CIRCLE.” We were somewhat surprised at the result of Saturday’s match. It shows us that hockey in Hastings is not at that low sate that some would have us believe. We believe another team could be picked capable of holding its own against Dannevirkc. We congratulate the selector (Mr. Winchcombe) on his team. Every player did his best, and showed in many cases improved form. B. McGorkindale was undoubtedly the surprise of the match. He played ' splendidly, and quickly silenced all I critics. Sachs, in goal, was not called <>n much. Campbell, right full-back was a disappointment. The heavy ' ground was against him. He did not ; play up to his club form. A. Fear i gave his usual good exhibition, yet ! we have no hesitation in saying that 'he had no right to be selected. He I belongs to a team that has forfeited manv of is members, and he was one of the first to fail to put in an ap pearancc. Me believe he has played but three competition games this season, and we are strongly of the opinion that L. Davis or Doree had a far greater claim on the selector. I Bullick, on Saturday s game, is still the best centre half in Hawke s Bay. G. Jones, left half, gave a splendid exhibition. His reverse strokes were particularly good. Ebbett, left wing, played as good a game as any he has placed in club matches. Nevertheless he is not yet up to representative standard. Land was good, hut he has played better. Smith was quite up to his club form and played a good, steady game. Grenside surprised us, but his passing was very inuch at fault. Rees, outside right, was much neglected during the first spell. In the second he got more opporunity and played with good judgment, a position new to him. Personallv, we are of the opinion that it would have been better if Grenside and Rees had changed places. Taken throughout, the team did well and worthily upheld Hastings traditions. The forward rushes were not at any time brilliant, but circle work was very good. The game was fast throughout, and Dannevirke was by no means an easily beaten team.
