WESTSHORE EMBANKMENT

WORK PROGRESSING WELL

PILES FOR BRIDGE COM MEXCED LAST WEEK. The work of constructing the Westshore < mbankment i- progressing very satisfactorily. From the Westshore end the embankment: has been constructed for a distance of 12(J yards. Meanwhile the dredge Waikaka has been working steadily, and the embankment made by this means is 380 yards long. The two embankments tire now separated by only 115 yards of water, and it is quite certain that the remaining portions of these will lie completed well in time for the Public Works Department to press on with the bridge. The dredge will (oniplete her work at the end referred to in about a week from now, and will then commence, at the other side, to raise the embankment to a uniform height of *7.ft above high water. This means that she will have to add a further lift of spoil to the present embankment. Altogether this work is going on most satisfactorily. THE BRIDGE. The Public Works Department is also pushing ahead with the work in connection with the construction of tlie bridge. Pile-making was commenced last week, and four have already been completed. In addition frames for 64 piles have been made, and very shortly tlit.' work will proceed more rapidly. An artesian well has been sunk to a depth of about 3i)oft, and there are said to be indications that water will soon be obtained. If that js correct, it will enable the pile making to go on more rapidly. The work is being watched with interest.
