THE NATIONAL GOVERNMENT.
BUDGET TO BE RE-DRAFTED LLOYD GEORGE ri TAX ATION MAY BE FOLLOWED. SESSION WILL PROBABLY EXTEND TO OCTOBER. mWBAFB —•FECIAL.] ’ WcHingtun. -'tm. Matters political preserved a quiet air over tho week end, but some activities can be looked for during the week- The main tqpic fur discu.-. sion among those legislators reuiaiuing in town is centred round the taxation proposals. It was contended that the proposals to be submitted by the Massey Government could not jiossibly have bc-n objected to l>v anyone. Of course, now that the National Government has been formed, the Budget will hate to be re drafted, and the one prepared l*y Mr. Allen will be destroyed. No indication can be obtained at the moment just by what means the enormous amount of revenue reqnir ed will be obtained. Possibly methods similar to those adopted by Mr. Lloyd George, viz., taxation of incomes, tea, and beer, will be fol lowed. The date of the announcement of the personnel of the Cabinet c*jinciues with that of the formation of Sir Joseph Ward’s first Ministry. August 6, 19U6. Sir Joseph Ward and Dr. R. McNab are the only two of that Ministry to hold Cabinet runs, to-day. There will be a great amount of work for the new Go\ erument t" accomplish, especially if the cost »i living question is tackled in a thorough manner, and the end of September is not too distant a date to predict for the end of the session.
It is stated about the House that those who predict an easy time fur the new Government are very opti mistic indeed.
