The Department of Agriculture, Industries and Commerce, Wellington. writes to the secretary of the Hastings Chamber of Commerce, stating that a circular letter had been received from Mr. E. ’ A meeting of the Hastings Orphans C hib was held last night for the purpose of making suit-able stIrangements for the entertainment of Lie Hastings men who leave for Tn-ntham on the lith inst. It was decided to fittingly farewell the men at the Savoy tea rooms on Friday I evening next . An excellent musical programme is in course of preparation, and several of the leading Orphans will deliver patriotic addresses. In consequence of this gathering the Orphans will forgo their usual fortnightly evening on the Monday following. At last night's meeting of tho Napier Borough Council the following recommendation was adopted: “That the Criterion Hotel Company be informed that the council has no legal power to grant an extension of the lease of the Criterion Hotel property, but that the council approved of tlie plans of the proposed alt erat ions and additions to the buildings as submitted, subject, however, to ratification by the Napier Licensing Committee, tho valuation and payment of such alterations and additions to be dealt with in the man no v proscribed by the lease."
