DEPUTATION TO THE-PREMIER MUCH LEGISLATION URGED. Wellington, Aug. 6.

A deputation from the fruitgrowers’ conference and the Nurserymen’s Association waited on tfte Premier urging the' construction of light railways to connect main lines, and that, smelter belts of trees be protected, otherwise many fruitgrowers would be ruined. They urged on Mr. Massey also that wrapping paper and fruit and tea canning machinery be admitted free, that, there be more orchard instruction and that the salaries of instructors be increased ; that a nomenclature and certificating board' be setup ; that an ..experimental orchard be established at- some place north of Auckland; that nurserymen be compensated for stock destroyed ; that hybridizers and experimentalists be protected; that the Orchard and Garden Diseases Act bo more rigidly enforced ; t'liat experimental orchards be under the orchard division of the Department of Agriculture; and that, an advance ot Alikxi for organising work until the orchard tax is collected be granted. Mr. Massey, in reply, said he wa.u prepare! to give effect vr> the recommendations.
