ARBITRATION COURT.

COASTAL OFFICERS’ AWARD

Wellington, July 3

Tin' Arbitration Court has filed an award in the dispute between the Wellington Merchant Service Guild and 16 owners of vessels of a gross registered tonnage of not less than 100 tons and not more than 600 tons. The Court stated it had great difficulty in making the award, owing to the services affected being conducted under such variable conditions. The Guild sought to have overtime paid to the officers. The Court, however, was unable to adopt this course, as doing so would have placed the officers in a position in which their interests would have conflicted with tlrnir duty, which was to minimise overtime; moreover, the Court was satisfied that the extra cost entailed bv such'a provision would probably have resulted in several ships affected being put out of commission, or at any rate being worked at heavyloss, The Court r.alis'il th.- aro.nalous conditions existing, i ; '' !.'r v-. ti><m seamen’s earnings are some;imps greater than those or office. :., anti t < meet the case had increased .the pay for masters and officers-.
