CURIOUS METHODS OF ACQUIRING GOOD LOOKS.
Professional beauties and actresses frequently have novel methods of improving and preserving their good IoSEs; while to remedy defects, a training, which to ordinary people would seem ridiculous, is carefully followed.
For instance, one beautiful actress whose neck and shoulders were painfully scraggy, secured the desired roundness by rubbing the offending parts with cod-liver-oil. Fifteen minutes daily the lady was pounded with oil-steeped fingers, the skin absorbing the grease under the persistent massage. After which, some peculiar exercises, calculated to bring the muscles of throat and chest into play, were regularly sustained. A famous doctor observes that cod-liver oil feeds the flesh when externally applied, and recommends his meagre patients to test this formula. Many ladies learn stage dancing because the rapid movements of feet and body lighten the complexion. It is said that half an hour’s daily practice-—once the steps have been acquired—will, m six months’ time, effect a change in the muddiest skin; while the figure and, carriage improve wonderfully. A musical comedy actress, who prides herself on the beauty of her limbs, suspends herself daily from a cord fastened across her room, and. suffers a sister professional to work her legs ptimphandlo fashion for ten or twelve minutes. This treatment is beneficial in several ways exercising the muscles ami imparting strength and hardness—both essential to a burlesque dancer. Artists’ models are said to undergo similar treatment, and society ladies, who admire graceful movement, pay handsomely to be thus treated.
A Parisian beauty specialist achieved reputation and riches by inventing a round-shouldered -cure. Hundreds of afflicted beauties placed themselves under his care, spending Jipurs daily in a prostrate condition, and wearing a peculiar back-board with an ingeniously fitted neckpiece. A contrivance to be worn under the dress was also provided, the result being a perfect cure in a very brief time. Several titled ladies became patients.
