NAPIER CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

COMMITTEE MEETING. A committee meeting of the Napier Chamber of Commerce was held yesterdav afternoon. Present: Messrs. S McLernon (chairmn), C. H. Edwards, C. H. Gould, T. H. Ringland, C Ellison, J. G. Herdman, r. W. Williams, and C. D. Wilson. Leave of absence was granted to Mr R. M. Kitto. CORRESPONDENCE.

The Minister of Lands wrote stating that he could not see his way to carry out the chamber’s suggestion to set aside land at Mohaka for a scenic reserve. —Matter left to Mr. Ellison to obtain further information. p . ~ The Department of Agriculture imtimated tnat the question of inspecting imported nuts at Napier was still being considered. —Held over. The Wellington Chamber of Commerce wrote that the conference of chambers had been postponed.—Recd vecl» The General Manager of Railwys in reply to the chamber’s letter regarding discrepancies between weight certificates for the same consignment of chaff issued at I almeiston and Auckland, stated that instructions had again been given for great care to be taken in weighing produce, etc. —Manager of Railways to be written to again suggesting the advisability of the weighing being done by some responsible member of the staff at each station. The Masterton and iSouh Canterbury Chambers of Commerce wrote stating that they would support the Davlight Saving Bill. —Received. The Hawke’s Bay branch of the New Zealand Underwriters’ Association wrote drawing attention to the necessity for consignees applying for release of cargoes from seized and detained steamers. —Received.

The Vvanganui, Canterbury, and Invercargill Chambers of Commerce wrote requesting the co-operation of the Napier Chamber to secure reasonable freight and insurance rates for wool, produce, etc., from New Zealand. —The secretary presented an estimate lie had übiaiued showing that the cost oi shipping u bale cf wool Home had roughly increased from 25/- to ■l’//-. — Mr f. The £sou'> limit-, however, was too low, as the first lew shippers would get the benefit ol the cover and the rest would have to go without. —It was decided to strongly recommend the Government if possible to largely increase the war risks for shippers contained in clause 4 of the Insurance Bill. NEW MEMBERS. Mr. L. H. McHardy was elected a member of the chamber, and Mr. J. D Briasco’s election was i.on firmed.
