WAIAPU DIOCESAN SYNOD

ANNUAL SESSION. The second annual session of the nineteenth synod of the Diocese of AX iapu was opened in the Synod Hall last evening under the nresiI ey of Bishop Sedgwick. There ; a large attendance of clerical anil lay members of the Synod. THE BISHOP’S ADDRESS. After welcoming the Synodsmen, i ecialiy the new members. Bishop Sedgwick paid a tribute to those clergymen and others of the Diocese wiio, since the previous meeting, had passed away or had become iucapaci fated from active church work by the infirmities of age. _ During his ad dress the Bishop referred to the war and the present age of social unrest. He concluded bis address witiv a lengthy reference to the Marsden Centenary celebrations, which commence at the close of the year, and to the Maori Mission in the diocese. NOTICES OF MOTION.

Mr. F. AV. AVilliams to move, “That the trustees of the Te Ante Trust Estate be authorised to raise a loan not exceeding £15,000 for the purpose of surveying and roading the estate for the purpose of cutting it up for leasing ; that this synod recommends the General Synod to authorise the trustees to raise this loan.”

Rev. E. Robertshawe to move. “That this Synod is utterly opposed to any alteration in the question put to candidates for the office of a deacon as to belief in Hol) Scripture. 2. That this proposition, if carried, be forwarded by his Lordship the Bishop to the Prayer Book Revision Committee in England, and to the next session of the General Synod of the province.” Mr. H. A. King to move, “That it lie a recommendation to the Pensions Board to take into consideration the possibility of making such alterations in the granting of pensions that any clergyman .retiring at 60 may receive a pension of £lOO ner annum and £5 or £lO. a year extra for each year he continues to work till he reaches the age of 65.”

Mr. H. A. King to move, “That in view cf the large increase in the number of communicants and in order to assist the, clergy and so per mit them to hold more celebrations in the suburban and count!) dis tricts, the Bishop be respectfully asked to consider the advisability of appointing certain laymen, approved by the District Archdeacon, to hand the cup to the laity in addition to their ordinary duty as servers.” Mr. J. B. Fielder to move. “That the Synod proceed to the election of one member to represent this dio cese on the Clerical Pension Board vice, the Ven. Archdeacon C. A. Tisdall, resigned,”
