The ordinary meeting was he’d last evening. Present: A. Styles (chair), Crs. Kilford, King, Blake, White, Donovan, Fowler and Wade. The Deputy-Mayor proposed that six weeks’ leave of absence be granted to the Mayor (Mr. W. Hart), and that the council pass a vote ol sympathy to him in his illness. Seconded by Cr. King and carried. Departmelit of Agriculture, Etc. — In reply re council’s complaint re spread of blackberry in the borough : (1) Department referring the matter to the Director of the Feilds and Experimental Farms ; (2) the latter referring the matter to the Fie’d Inspector at Hastings.—Received.

N.Z. State Guaranteed Advances Office. —Formal notification on an advance of £lO,OOO, on a gross amount of £56.325 —granted, being made through the Post Office to be lodged at the bank to the credit of the council. —Received.

General Manager N.Z. Railways.- — In reply re suggested subway at or between Avenue road and St. Aubyn street regretting being unable to comply with request. A foot overbridge will be provided at St. Aubyn street which should be sufficient for all reasonable requirements, but the providing of efficient drainage even for a sub-way for pedestrians only would be a- difficult and expensive matter, while the land required to provide approaches to a sub-way, if constructed, will be required for other purposes.—Received. District Engineer N.Z. Railways.— In reply, agreeing to lease land between Lyndon road and Heretaunga street to the council on a year to year tenure at a.peppercorn rental, for beautifying purposes. The fee for the preparation of the deed would be 10/-. The land occupied by Messrs. Holt and Sons is not available for lease. Asking if above lease is to be prepared in the name of the council or the Beautifying Society (plan of land to be leased enclosed). —Referred to No. 1 Committee, the lease to he drawn out in the council’s name.

GENERAL. A number of applications to shift buildings were granted. It was resolved to write to Messrs. Richardson, McCabe and Co., urging that they use their best efforts to furnish the council with the Deisel engine as soon as passible. It was decided to call a full meeting of the council for Monday night to discuss the plans of the proposed new theatre. REPORTS. 4. That the engineer be instructed to immediately repair Heretaunga street pending the construction of the permanent street as provided for in the loan proposals.—Withdrawn 5. That no more loan moneys be spent on roads, footpaths or concrete channelling unless the consent of the council is obtained in each specific case and an estimate of the cost approved of. —Seconded by Cr. Kilford, and carried. 6. That the resolution passed on 25th June, 1914, providing for a free allowance of 355,000 gallons and the metering of all premises, be rescinded and the following substituted: All premises paying full rate 25,000 gallons free, business places paying half rate 12.500 gllons free. The inspector to meter only those places where he has reason to suspect this allowance is being exceeded ; and in all cases where the total amount oi water used computed at 9d per thousand gallons exceeds the amount of the water rate, the ratepayer shall have the option of paying eitheir the difference between the two amounts or the water in excess of the allownee at 9d per 1000 gallons. The by-laws to be altered accordingly. —Referred to No. 1 Committee for reconsideration.
