HASTINGS STREETS.
• TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —In your columns I noticed that Mr. Fowler has ’ a notice of motion to bring forward at the next meeting of the council, “That the engineer lie instructed to put Heretairaga street in repair at once.” It is refreshing to see that even a councillor can he impressed with the simple awfulness of our main streets, but seeing that the council recently raised a loan which included an amount fcr road cnstruction, does it not strike Mr. Fowler that anything spent on -mere repair of the roads in their present state would be foolish waste of money. The onlyreal remedy is to commence laying down new roads of something like a permanent nature, which would not only be worthy of the town but would immediately prove itself to be genuine economv.—l am, etc., W.
