THE UNHONOURED DEAD.
TO THE EDITOR Sir, —I xvas both surprised and grieved to notice that neither the Deputy Mayor nor any of the Coun cillors were present at the funeral obsequies of the late William Lane, ex Mayor of Hastings. Mr. Lane xvas a man noted for his generosity to local institutions, and the charity which he extended to others during his life was not extended to him when he died. The people of Hastings are either utterly selfish or utterly narrow-minded to the last, degree, xvhen only half a dozen people can find time to pay their last respects to a very old and worthy citizen.—l am, etc.. DO UNTO OTHERS.
