SALE OF RACING STOCK.

Timaru, May 29. Mr. W. H. Pelmer’s racing stock was offered at auction to-day at Washdyke. The steeplechaser The Brewer was sold for 255gns. to Mr. James Smith, Dunedin, and John Bunyan for 95gns. to Mr. Helworthy. Martel was passed in at 100gns., but a sale is pending at a price beyond that. f There was a poor demand for hacks, the highest price being 33gns. EFFECT OF CALCUTTA SWEEP. London, May 29. The “Dailv Telegraph” states that the Jockey Club is considering the effect of the Calcutta Sweep on the Derby by inducing owners for a consideration to start horses. Prominent members are of opinion that the practice is injurious to the sporting and honourable character of the world’s greatest race.

RACING NOTES.

(By ” Sphinx.”) The result of the English Derby will not be readily forgotten by backers in the Old Country. It will be remembered that The Tetrach after his phenomenal success as a two-year-old was backed right, through the winter at very short prices and notwithstanding the imports that al! was not right with the colt money was .still forthcoming until the pen was driven through ins name a few weeks ago. On the defection of the ” moral.” punte.s then turned their attention to Iveiinvinore, who to a certain extent justified their action by landing the Two Thousand Guineas. However, a bad start disposed, of Ins .chance in the Derby and the race .-was won bv one of the low-pueed division. Taking into consideration the fate of Craganour, last yerrs’ favourite, v.bo finished first but lost the race on a protest, and their experiences this there should be some juffrification for the belief that ante-post wagering wjll not be in such popular favour in future as has been the ease in the past. Toil Hloan, the well-known jockev. who has been living in France since his compulsory retirement from the saddle, is now reported to be running a hotel in Paris. His wonderful success wnen riding in England was no doubt instrumental in providing him with sufficient of the world’s goods to enable the future to be faced with equanimity. The two-year-old colt by Charlemagne—Armijera, bought as a yearling bv Mr. T. P. McKay, the ‘West Australian sportsman, for 725 guineas, is being put through his paces bv 1. Foulsham at Randwick. He will" race under the name of Kilsyth. ', ,

Trianon 11., the French ’chaser, which ran second in the English National, was beaten out oi a place under 11.3 in the Prix du President de la Republique a forenight after his effort at A int ree. This form does not speak highly lor this year’s British jumpers. Builawarra. the Australian steeplechaser, has arrived safely in England and has gone into Escott/s stable at Lewes. He is said to have favourably impressed the English critics. Although Brakespear faded in the Derby his sire. Spearmint, retained his reputation when The Curragh won the Kempton Park Great Jubiless Handicap. At Newmarket on April 16th The Curragh also landed the Babraham Plate of £875, run over a mile and a half. An item of interest this week is the reappearance of ISandstream on the local tracks. The veteran son of San Fran is quite sound egain and his trainer, W. Griffiths, expects him to stand another preparation. Possibly he will be given a trial over the battens.

Player looks all the better for his exertions at Wanganui and goes in his work with evident relish. 'He may be confidently expected to 1 further distinguish himself before the curtain is rung down on the jumping season. it has bpen finally decided that Hallowtffffs will retire to the stud, therefore New Zealand racegoers are not likeljF to see the well performed son of Martagbn measuring strides with the Dominion chainpions. At 30 guineas a mare, -the English horse should receive plenty of patronage, copsidering the prominent part played by members of the family in the Old Country as well as Australia.

After his running at Hastings it is difficult to understand Sir Moseley being allowed to start eleventh favourite in the Winter Oats at Wanganui. Those who remained Icyal to the King’s Guest horse were rewarded with a substantial dividend.

A good word comes from Wanganui about the prospects of Good-

win Park in the big jumping events ahead. Although well enough to win on the second day he can be still improved and is likely to be dangerous at National time. Magdala's success at North Otago meeting is the first scored by the Comedian gelding since his victory in the Winter Cup in 15)12. One of the latest of the Charlemagne 11. tribe to score is Vanna ex Susannah, who was successful in the Trial Stakes at the North Otago meeting. Trafalgar's return to the tracks has been the principal item of interest inSJtustralian sporting circles reeently’and Higinbotham’s efforts to once more produce the champion first and well will be attended with the best wishes of the racing fraternity/ Although rising nine .the Wallace horse is considered to have every chance of recovering his form and is quite sound again and revelling in his work. As a rule, a stallion fails to “ come back ” after a season or two at the stud, but no doubt Trafalgar’s owner was influenced in his decision to give his old favourite ariother trial, fry. the dearth of weight-for-age horses now racing in the Commonwealth. Bebbington, the Birkenhead horse, which sired La Neive, winner of the Brisbane Thousand, is the first son of the Orine stallion to beget, a victor of an important race. Antoinette is now in E. A. Connolly’s stable at Caulfield. The Soult mare lias been a great disappointment since her arrival in Victoria. Counsel, the Vasco-Silkgown colt, at one time in Mr. Greenwood s stable, recently dropped dead in Sydney. The latest descendant of Wakeful seen out is by Positano. and is said to be the most promising of the family. Balranala. the colt in question, cost 1400 guineas as a yearling and got some of it back when winning the Sydney Tattersalls Stakes last week. Moonbria. by Merriwee—La Notte, is reported to be a greatly improved horse and is expected to do something big in the spring. He is still racing in Mr. E. J. Watt’s colour:;. F. Bullock, the Australian horseman, who has been following his calling in Germany during the last two seasons, recently rode four winners in one day in England. The retirement of E. Wootton and Maher’s absence from the saddle through indisposition hr.;, provided opportunities for the rank and file not usually available, it is said that Mcrnington Cannon will resume riding if he can secure a reasonable retainer, but he does not entertain the idea of again figuring as a free lance. The Tetrach. for whom i n offer of 15.000 guineas was recently refused, has retired to the slud, b.is fee being 400 guineas. There is money in owning a fashionable horse in England.

Rinaldo appears to lie going from bad to worse. After running respectably when not ready at the Auckland summer meeting, it was expected that Air. Reid’s representative would soon reproduce his spring form, but these have fallen far short of realisation. He recently ran unplace'd in the Oainaru Cup under 8.11, in which the winner Thrax. carrying 9.5, covered the ten furlongs in heav.v going in 2mm. I3sec. Barb W ire, by Glutcn--Chiara. is a strong Auckland fancy for the Great Northern Hurdles. He is well bred but h is past performances have not brought him into notoriety. The good work he is doing at Ellerslie is ne> doubt responsible for his elevation to public favour. Jackman’s success in flic big event at Wanganui was remarkable for the fact that it was his first appearance over country. Graduating from the hunters' ranks, his displays over hurdles were not sufficiently notieeablc to suggest a career oxer the fences. He. however, won very easily and will no doubt be accorded plenty of support on his next appearance. Hou Solvo is being boomed as a Durhy colt and Dominion aspirants for the Australian Blue Riband are premised a warm time when tackling the* sou of Solution. Imshi ami Ravello are two others considered worthy of support for the premier three-year-old event. Woorak, the crack two-year-old cl the season, is not so much in favour owing to the failure hitherto of Traquar’s stock to negotiate a distance of ground. It seems wonderful, considering Hie number of thoroughbreds produced in Australia, that so few are of any account ’ii classic events. An English writer on this subj<ct recently remarked that the Australians in purchasing blood stock at Home, eared nothing for shape or make, as long as their acquisitions ue.e cheap. As is verx well known there me ' exceptions to tins rule, in the persons of Mr. S. Hordern, who bought Bronzino for, 11 is said. 12,000 guineas, and the Melbourne bookmaker. Mr. Sol Green, who is reported to have given K',ooo guineas for White Star now at his property, the Shipley stud.
