THE REP. TEAM. (By “Rugby.”) Wednesday next (his Majesty’s Birthday) will see the . Recreation Ground at Napier occupied with the first of a series of interprovincial Rugby football matches to be played this season under the jurisdiction of the Hawke’s Bay Rugby I nion when the local team will be pitted against the doughty representatives from the Wairarapa. Before the star performance ou the afternoon’s pro gramme is whistled on, the public will once again have the opportunity of witnessing the Te Ante College lads in the local arena, and this fact alone should prove a decided attraction. To ponder over the very name “Te Ante” is enough to make one inclined to become reminiscent, but space forbids, nevertheless when wei remember the names of Ellison, Gage, Wi Hapi, James, Paul. “Fri day 1 Tomoana, Paul Pari, Taku, Lemuel, Taranaki, and others, we must recognise the important factor the College has been in Dominion Rugby circles, and the mantle still rests on the present day players who retain the reputation of their predecessors in playing the open, clean game whicih always tends to make it so attractive. The College opponents will be the local High Senool Old Boys senior team, which also enjoys the distinction of playing spectacular football —win or lose. The Rugbv Union has displayed sound judgment in bringing these two teams together as a curtainraiser to the. big match and I feel disposed to predict that those who visit the ground early on Wednesday will be satisfactorily entertained, ami 1 still further predict that this particular fixture will be not a whit Jess interesting than the succeeding struggle for provincial supremacy. We have been led to believe that local Rugbv football has taken a new lease of life in Hawke’s Bay this season and up to the present this prediction has been verified in the limited number of matches played so far. A large number of new aspir ants for representative honours have been out and many street corner confabs have been held for some time past as to the names of the chosen to uphold the honour of the province in its first effort this year. Many opinions have been expressed as to the probable composition of the team, and I feel justified in express, ing the oninion that the selectors’ ultimatum differs vastly from the opinions held by the majority of those who have closely scanned form since the opening. I certainly did not think for one moment that the selector would fall back upon some of those who have already failed in big contests and discard the undoubt ed merits of others, who although new to local honours, have demonstrated their right to receive more consideration than has been vouch safed to them. I do not cavil at the foreground representatives. We possess so many player s of equal merit in this direction that the choice of several whose form has been convincing—but fruitless —that any distinct alteration in the present composition would have little effect still the claims of Mason, Brownlee and Steele have been so marked that the selector would have ben justified in giving either of them a position in the team in the place of Aitken. With regard to the back division, there is decided consensus of opinion that the present season’s form has not been considered. And

tlie question is asked. Why ? It is more than. I can grapple with. Why McNamara should be experimented with in the position of “licks creation” as the Yankee says. To compare him with Cook in the particular locality referred to needs ho argument. The latter possesses every qualification for the position, and has demonstrated the fact in several fixtures he has played in. In kicking, stopping, taking, feinting and side stepping he has outshone the present occupier referred to. Ami why he has been passed over for a player who is practical]} new to the position and has not shown himself adapted for it, must go down in local football history as not understand able. Bailey and Porohiwi have also demonstrated the fact that, their claims are above either of the selee tor’s choice in this particular direction, and it must be borne in mind that it is the hinge upon which all recognised back play pendulates —the selector has in my opinion sadly erred. If no other error had been committed, this in itself is apt to wreck cur hopes in the coming struggle, but as great a risk has been taken in the full back division. Dine (without the crippled knee) would not have been my choice. He is a good kick and taker, I admit, but I shall feel disposed to close my eyes if he finds himself bombarded by the lusty dairy fed cattiers from beyond the hills. There are others who would have more capably filled the bill. However, let us hope that the selector will be able to shake hands with himself after the struggle is over, as I (with many others) will be glad to congratulate him if he proves my predictions awry. Secretary Nielsen and his eo-workers are looking forward to a bumper house, and rightly so, as they are present ing a bill of fare sufficiently enticing to satisfv the most fastidious.
