HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP. LOWE BEATS BARTLETT. A TRUCE IN THE ELEVENTH ROUND. Gisborne, May 29. The heavyweight boxing championship of New Zealand was involved in a contest which took place between Bert Lowe and Bill Bartlett. At the end of round four honours were even, both gladiators receiving a fair amount of punishment. Lowe forced in round 5, and Bartlett being walling, some fierce rallies ensued. Lowe’s cheek showed signs of wear. Bartlett was hitting Lowe frequently, but his blows lacked the steam of the Gisborne man. Bartlett here hurt his hands. In the next session Bartlett hurt Lowe a Jot by a solid right uppercut, but shortly after had to take a stinging left to the mouth. Early in the seventh round Lowe swung a right on to Bartlett’s nose, and a straight left to the face brought more trouble to Bartlett. He subsequently swung a left on to Lowe and knocked him thrugh the ropes. Lowe took the count to nine, and then got up. Lowe scored frequently in the next round. By means of a straight left to thq head Bartlett got back with high uppercuts. Both men were bleeding freely in the ninth round, Bartlett from nose and Lowe from the cheek. Lowe was the stronger in the tenth, and forced the fighting. Bartlett kept him off well by means of a straight left, but Lowe got the round. Lowe’s staying powers told in the eleventh, and Bartlett took a number of heavy blows that weakened him considerably. At the conclusion of the round Bartlett, who had hurt his hands badly in the fifth round, decided to retire, and the towel was accordingly skied.
