Correspondence was dealt with as follows: —From — Borough Engineer. forwarding estimated cost of laying extension of sewer in Davis street, re Sands. £36.—Received, work to be carried out. ' . Nlanager of abattoirs, applying for the installation of a hot water service in the house occupied by him, and also repairs to the footpaths.—Referred to Abattoirs Cominitee. Hastings Band Society, applying for a grant of £5(l to the band fund to purchase new uniforms, the Mavor stated that provision for a grant of £25 had been made in the estimates for the current year. Subsidy of £25 granted for five concerts to be given on dates approved by the council. British General Electrical Conipanv. re balance of account £7 8 6, and applying for refund of £5O deposit.—Referred to Mr. Cliniie. Hawke’s Bay Hockey Association, applying for permission to charge for admission to (. crnwall Park on June 3rd.—Granted. Fenwick Bros., Dunedin, intimating that thev would be glad to hear from the council when they have anv debentures for sale.—Received. t). Mackenzie, application for electric light at his residence in Oliphant road, and offering the sum of £3 towards the cost of poles, etc.—Referred to the Electric Light Committee. Hawke’s Bay County Council, re trees Boundary road, acknowledging receipt of letter and intimating that the overseer has been sjisked to attend to the matter. —Received. Hawke’s Bay County Council re footpath from Havelock .North to Hastings, asking if June sth, the date of the Elsthorpe road conference would be suitable for conference. —Date agreed to. Hawke’s Bay County Council forwarding notice that the conference re Elsthorpe road will take place on Friday, June sth, at 10.30 a.m.. and asking that a committee and the Hastings business men who may attend be advised. —Received ; bust ness people to be invited. Railway Department, returning the council’s deed number 9249 with additional right endorsed to cover electric line mains at Alexandra street, etc., duly executed by the Minister. —Received. Railway Department, m reply to reference to proposed arrangement■ of the Hastitngs station yard, advising that the matter is now under considerf.thm by the General .Manager, to whom the letter has been referred. —Received. Railway Department, in further peplv re fire in dram in Railway road. suggesting that what should he done to prevent damage by hre to this drain is that the rough grass overgrowing it should be cleared away by whoever is responsible for the maintenance of the drain, r urthere that there is not any evidence that the fire in March last was caused by sparks from engines, nor by the dropping of a match by any of the department’s employees who resent any such suggestion. Richardson, McCabe and Co., in regard to their claim for £2O 5 - for six sets of starting resistances for the Allen pumps.—Mr. Climie’s action was approved. Department of Labour ro workers dwellings in Hastings, asking the council to waive a portion of the construction of the kerbing, channelling and footpaths of Lucknow and Cawnpore streets beside Lot 45 on the Lomas Settlement. As shown on the plan Lot 45 is to remain departmental property, therefore the kerbing, channelling, etc., would be quite unnecessary, and the department undertakes not to further subdivide this lot or dispose of it. —Deferred until plan is submitted. Department of Labour, forwarding a booklet of typical plans of workers’ dwelling and photographs of workers’ dwellings erected in various parts of the Dominion.— Received. Railway Department, calling attention t-o the caving of the borough drain near the railway fence at Hastings racecourse platform, for a distance of about fifty feet, owing apparently to the spreaders in drain ■giving way, and asking that the matter be’ attended to before the winter meeting.—Engineer to report. J. M. Steeie. Auckland, re loan, acknowledging receipt of letter of the 18th. and in reply regretting Ihatf his principles decline to take up the loan at 4< per cent.—Received. Charles Drummond, re sewer McLean street, referring to an application made by him some eight months ago for an extension of the sewer to his property in McLean .street, when ne was led to understand that as soon as the loan came forward his bouse would be connected, but now, in conversation with the borough engineer, he finds that McLean street is net included in the loan proposals, and asking th..t this verv necessary work should be provided for.—Referred to the borough engineer to report. water to be laid to his place in St. Aubyn street which is still unconnected and asking what the council intends doing.—Connection to be made for a distance of 44 feet • applicant to do the balance of the work.

Maurice Mason, referring to the sewer in Station street which ends at the urinal at the railway station and asking that it be extended so that connection can be made with premises on which he intends meeting shop.; about a chain and a half further cn. —To be informed that the council will do the work at his expense and refund the money out of loan money. \V. J. White, re footpaths Charles street, asking the council to consider the matter of putting the tarring of this footpath m hand at once.—Received. Thompson and Cook, forwarding provisional plans of subdivision ot part of Mr. Crawford - .; property off Fitz.ov Avenue for approval.—Referred'to Roads and Drainage Committee. , . r Thompson and Cock, forwarding provision plans of subdivision of part of Mr. E. H. Williams’ propert v off Pakowhai road and litzroy Avenue for approval. Referred to Roads Committee. Borough solicitor, forwarding dedication of Burnett street for execution bv the council. —Approved. Borough solicitor, forwarding draft agreement between the council and the Havelock North Town Board regarding the supply of water bv the Town Board outside the Town Board area.—Left to committee with power to act. Borough solicitor, forwarding draft agreement with Mr. Clinim in re drainage works. —Left in the hands of the Mayor and t_ r. Hoiderness. . , Electrical engineer, calling attention to the extra work entailed by the running of the gas engine, ami pointing out that it is quite impossible to expect one engineer to attend to and oil up. etc., all these machines at one time, and saying that he will have to put on another man to cope with the work as the overhauling is gieatlv increased. His staff are always working against time to get everything in running order by 4 p.m. —Man to be appointed. COMMITTEES. The following committees were appointed for the ensuing year - To deal with roads, drainage and water. abattoirs and reserves, horses, etc.: The Mayor, Crs. Blake, Donovan. McCormick. King and White. To deal with (lectric light, bylaws. Sunday concerts, finance and library: The Mayo?, Crs. Styles, Hoklernc>s. McKibbm and Made. GENERAL. The Mavor moved, re section 39 of ‘ ’ The Municipal Corporations Act. 1913.”: “That a remit be forwarded to the Municipal Association to provide that a notice under the above section of the Act can be registered notwithstanding anything to the contrary contained in the Land Transfer or any other Act. —Seconded by Cr. Holderness and earned. Cr. Holderness moved: ‘‘That the council rescind the existing re.alution of the Hastings Borough Council with regard to the conditions to be required for the formation ot new roads, and that the borough engineer be instructed to lay before the council at next meeting draft conditions providing for the. laying of new streets being required to provide for the formation and metalling of streets and footpaths, and the laying elown of sewers ami water mains, and the provision of kerbi.ig. channelling. crossings, etc." —Seconded hy Cr. McKihbin and carried Cr. Holderness gave notice to m.;ve that the borough engineer’s report on above- (..ireaely compiled) be adopted. The tender of Messrs. Williams and Creagh for cartage between Napier and Hastings was accepted. Mr. C. H. Watson, of Auckland, wr.s appointed assistant, borough enginee r out of nine applicants at a salary of £lBO per annum, and it was decided to secure his services immediately. Consideration of the estimates was deferred till a special meeting to be held on Thursday evening next. The Mayor reported that he had allowe<i the Electrical engineer to proceed to the Napier Hospital at the request of the chairman of the Board to inspect their connections. —Action approved. The meeting then rose.
