Colonel Goethals has announced that the canal will be opened to merchant shipping on June Ist. |lt was previously arranged to open the canal for traffic on January 1, 1915. The canal varies in width from 300 ft. to 1000 ft. i The Gatum dam is 30ft. above the normal lake level. The length of the' Culebra cut is nine miles. There are three double sets of locks at Gatum, with an average lift of 231 ft. ; one double set at Pedro Miguel, and two double sets at Miraflores. The total number of men employed is 40,000.]
