A MERCIFUL FARMER.
A young girl was to make her first visit to a cousin jn Uw country. At the station, she’was met by the cousin, •nd after a half-hour’s drive he told her they were approaching his farm. In one of his bread fields that met the young lady's attentive eye stood a windmill, and gathered around it were several pigs. “Well that beats anything I ever heard of!” exclaimed the fair one. “I didn't know that yon farmers were bo “WlfWt does?” queried the country txrasnu . “That over yonder,” replier the girl, pomtmg a pretty finger. “Just think of having a fan out in the field to keep thorn Digs oooL” A UtERARY PREFERENCE. Mrii Smith was very fond of reading, and while on * vi«t to Mrs. Brown one afternoon she started to talk upon the subject of books. * “You have .quite a number of books, I see,” remarked the visitor, glancing around the room. “ Which do yon think is the most helpful to you?” “Oh, the dictionary, without a doubt,” was the prompt response of ■fra. Brown.
“You don’t really mean it;” exclaimed tbs visitor, assuming for some reason a look of surprise. “May I ask in what particular way?” “Cbrtainly,” was the obliging reply of the hostess. “The baby sits on it at the table and it saves the price of a high chair.” THE UNKNOWN QUANTITY. “I*ll hot she will,” began the rash youth. "Don't!” interrupted the older and wiser minmwnwwi. “Don't bet that she will ever do anything.
