Mrs. and Miss Robertson, who have been visiting Napier, returned to by the Taupo coach this morning. Mr. W. E. Gallen, of the Nelson Lands Department, who has been spending a short holiday in Napier, left by the mail train this morning on his return home. Mr. H. P. Harris, of Hamilton, who has been •appointed successor to Mr. Ching of the Napier Office of the South British Insurance Company, has commenced his new duties.

The friends of Mr. John Carlton, of Hastings, who is at present an inmate of the Napier Hospital, suffering from a poisoned leg. will be pleased to hear that he is steadily improving. Mr. and Mrs A. McCarthy or Dunedin, accompanied by their son and two daughters left Napier this morning by the ccach for Taupo. Later they proceed to Rotorua and thence to Auckland to inspect the Exhibition., The death is announced from Sydney of Mr. W. E. White, of Belltrees station. Deceased was a prominent pastoralist and breeder and owner of racing stock. His death occurred after an operation. Mr. W. H. Gibbs, who has been for the past - thirteen years dist rict storekeeper in Christchurch under the Public Works Department, is retiring shortly. He is to he succeeded by Mr. C. A. Fraser, of Whangarei. M. Lucien Nopenaire, the wellknown leader of the French woolbuyers, arrived in New Zealand on Wednesday by R.M.S. Rotorua. He was acting-commissioner for New Zealand at the Roubaix Exhibition (France) held in 1911. Mrs. J. Vile. sen., of Pah'atna. is at present in a precarious state of health. Mrs. Vile, who has attained the great age of 97 years, is one of the pioneers of the Wairarapa and Bush districts, having resided there for thirty years. Vp to a short time ago she was remarkably hale and hearty.

Tbe death occurred last week of Mr. Richard Hull, of Epsom. Auckland, who was for many years con nected with the Government Stock Department in Palmerston South. Marlborough, Wanganui and latter ly in Auckland. Three years ago he reached the age of 65 years, and retired from the Stock Department. Mr. Massey, who is almost restored to complete health, left Wellington last night for Auckland, where he stays for about a week, but he does not intend to undertake any business there. Discussing his illrcss. he said that although he wr.s 57 years of age he had never before been confined to his bed for a single day—Press Association. It haring been rumoured that Mr. Horatio Everett, of Riwaka. chair man of the Waimea County Council, would contest the Motneka seat at the next general election, a Nelson ‘•Mail” representative put the ques tion to him. and was informed that the rumour was quite correct. Mr. Everett added that he would stand as a supporter of the present Govern ment.

Lord Rochdale, of Rochdale. Lan cashire, England. is expected to make a visit to New Zealand shortly. His Lordship, who is at present in • Melbourne on his way to Sydney, is interested in Australian wool, and is about to make several business inquiries about the commodity in Aus tralia and New Zealand. He states that Australian wool is regarded the world over as being the best in point of fineness and other qualities. A very pleasant little ceremony - took place at the Napier- Office of the South British Insurance Company to-day when the staff foregathered to bid farewell to Mr. T. B. Ching who leaves to-morrow morning to take up the position of manager of the Company’s Wellington branch. Mr. E. P. Dinwiddie, on behalf of the staff, presented Mr. Ching with a set of decanters as a token of their esteem, and expressed the staff’s regret at Mr. Ching’s departure. Suitable acknowledgement of the presentation and of the kind words expressed was made by Mr. Ching. The Hon. George Fowlds, accompanied by Miss May Fowlds, left by the Maheno to-day to join the Orvie to, en route to Great Britain and Europe, whence he will return »n time to contest the Grey Lynn sent at the next general election. The Hon. .Geo. Fowhls entertained his election committees on Saturday night. In the course of a speech he stated that he would again be a can didate for Grey Lynn at the general election. Referring to the last election, he said:—“We had a combina tion of circumstances that was in way peculiar. The most that can be said about it was that a fluke occurred. I hare no expectation that a similar result will occur again. There is not the slightest fear of that.”
