THE BRITISH NAVY.

LIBERAL CABINET UNITED. •EXORCISING THE NIGHT- . MARE.” [PBESS ASSOCIATION COPYRIGHT.] London, Jan. 9. Mr. S. O. Buckinaster, Liberal member for Keighley division of Yorkshire, speaking at Keighley, said there was not even a rift in the Government ranks over the armament policy. They remained as always, namely, not to risk the safety of themselves or the dominions and to maintain the unassailable superiority of the fleet, but neither for aggrandisement nor aggression would they 7 add a single un#. While they 7 would maintain their own rights they 7 would not menace the rights of others. They desired the goodwill of all, and hoped that this policy plainly expressed and pursued would exorcise the nightmare of suspicion and distrust under which the nations of Europe gasped for breath.

MR. CHURCHILL AT PARIS. ' Paris, Jan. 9. Mr. Churchill is on a holiday visit here. He will exchange unofficial conversations with three members of the Cabinet. The French Government takes the view that the press has attached too much importance to Mr. Lloyd George’s naval statement. * CANADA’S POLICY. A HOSTILE SENATE. Ottawa, Jan. 9. The Conservative newspapers announce that the Government is hesitating whether to introduce the Naval Bill, feeling that it is useless again to place the measure at the mercy of a Senate politically opposed to the Government. GRAIN GROWERS PREFER MERCHANTMEN. (Received 10, 9.0 a.m.) Ottawa, Jan. 9. The Western grain growers of Canada urge that instead of money being used to build warships, it would be better to establish a merchant fleet to provide relief from extortion by the steamship combine.
