AMMUNITION SEIZED

Large quantities of ammunition were seized at Newry and also aboard a steamer at Drogheda. The Government are advised that the arms proclamation is ultra vires and nor sustainable.

Tlie arms embaigo jn-uclamation was issued under the Customs Act, which cannot cover the movement of goods front one port in the United Kingdom to another. A second proclamation sets forth, the powers of Customs officials in the matter of seizing arms intended for ultimate exportation from the. United Kingdom. NOT ULTRA VIRES. (Received 23 10.30 a.m.) London, Dec. 22. Sir John Simon. Solicitor-General, denies the Gv,v ernment lias been advised that the Ulster proclamation is ultra vires. PRAYERS FOR PEACE AND GOODWILL. (Received 23, 10.20 a.m.) London. Dec. 22. The Bishop of London, in view of the situation in Ulster, has advised the reading of the collect next Sunday for deliverance from the serious dangers threatening us in Ireland. A solemn service of intercession is also authorised and the introduction of the Litany prayer for preservation. against The calamity of civil war.
The various Nonconformist churches have issued an interdenominational appeal for prayers next Sunday for peace in Ireland and South Africa, wisdom in rulers, and a spirit of brotherly• love amongst the people.
