However there an.- j signs oi improvement and indications j or brighter fetinny mornings and bewitching evenings ahead for the enjoyment ot the many thousands hailing; with delight the Christmas week. How glorious ar>* the Christmas skies by , night 1 Two thousand years ago, those : skies were radiant with Angenc bands, { heraidiug w iwi joyous songs the incar- ; nation uf the "God of Loveand i ■ -..-rmore their stirring orbs seem still: repeating "Goodwill u> Men.’’ flow tne blue vault sparkles witii starsi { All, sentinel like gazing down from ' their thrones, like recording angels Oi | the night ! No voice comes from them i to us —no eye can lift the veil from i tfieir bright faces, and reveal to tnai ; tli-ur destinies. Oh, how the sages ci I earth have sought to penetrate thy un- ! iptnomablo depots of light, worlds heap-j i d on worlds receding, gathering count Jcssiy as the sight fails! Emblem of tnat infinite space, whose depths no eye bitt God’s can penetrate! Yet wouiu we praise thee with a gentler praise, an 1 make thee a symbol that ma... preach to earth’s sons contentment, foi though heaven’s brightest regi >n i.linin', thy radianqe Hows from stars nameless, feeble, undeserineu. me time Happiness, the light of lite which flows not from dazzling favours, tin- lot oi lew, but from a thousand bright atoms vnat strew the path of all.— lt is Christmas time, a happy remedy Im tlio.se petty strifes or misunderstandings- which so often and mi needly disturb cur peace, ami it is e'-peeially a I happy eu.Mom at this season when we are making up our accounts with the closing year, and see some things in the annual register <>l memory that were better blotted out —when the dying ye.ir reminds ns of our mortality, and qua-kens our desire to be at peace with | all men. ‘‘Peace on Earth!” sang | Ange's of old in the Christmas skies ; ■ and in obedience to the heayenly voices, let us turn the happiness of the season to the promotion of love. There is a tendency in joy to forgive—-an | elation of heart that overlooks injuries, j a desire that ail should be happy as i ourselves.
