QUEER FOOD THEORIES.
Nowadays eating has become a veritable science, and there are those who assert that a man can alter his very character it he will only indulge in tho right kind or diet. The other day the l>rivate secretary of tho Maharajah ot Jhalawar gave a led are on food in lamdon. in the course of which he stated that tho eating of onions is conducive to “darkness of spirit.” He also averred tint tho caste "system in India is, largely regulated by diet. Thus, those oi the highest caste only eat vegetarian »l lrl t 0 keep their souls pure. -Members of another caste are allowed to eat meat so that they may become fitted... to bo warriors; while the lowest caste cf all. eat “stale, flat foods," which suit their unspiritual natures. Iwo noted German professors gave it as their opinion not long ago that it’ people would eat plenty of chalk thev would not only have more energy and happiness, but considerably increased bram-Dower.
A doctor in Philadelphia recently stated that no one who eats a pound cf macaroni daily will ever become a drui'Kard, but he also stipulated that tho would-be teetotaller should live <m’irelv on a vegetarian diet, and never touch meat in any circumstances. In direct contradiction to the “vegetarianism for sotilfulness” theory is that <4 a Mrs. Parker, of New York, this lady believes that there is nothin*' liko Imo chops and glasses of beer to inspire poets and writers, and she opened a. restaurant for the express purpose of providing those who would win tho muso with the proper kind of diet, has no patience with people who would become ‘soulful” on prunes and. lentils, and her “inn for Bohemians,” as her establishment is called, has certainly been well patronized by budding lennysons and the future Merediths. lhe belief is gaining ground in many quarters that if you wish to stave off old age and to have the feeling of perennial youth and gaiety, no matter what your actual years may be, yon cannot do better than eat plenty of sugar. Ono of the pioneers of this theory is Professor Metchnikoff, who has made exhaustive experiments to prove his statements. There are some who even assort that not only dot's the frequent eating J sugar keep one from growing old, but that if a man or woman will begin tho sugar treatment, even after senility has set in, the effect will be so great as to amount to a complete change in his or her character.
