K ‘° Kegent just a century ago, while, his magnificent palace,. Carlton House was being built on the other side oi the way. Tho original frontage in Pali Mall was rebuilt many years ago, and is now again bemg pulled down, but the gallery, the entrance of which is in court, is one of the original reception looms ot the house, and contains a magnificent Adams ceiling. After tho First Gentleman in Europe had taken up his residence at Carlton tT’ , tho P remiscs became tho homo ot tho Century Club, a famous debating rendezvous for M.P.s during the first half of tho last century. It was then for some years the home of tho famous art dealer, Mr. Colnaghi. The Into King inspected the gallery and the collection on several occasions. He Avas always very interested in tho old room, and also particularly in anv historical and military pictures I had ” said Mr. Turner, an art dealer, the latest occupant of the premises. “Ho wa« very quick in pointing out any inaccuracy in name or in uniform, but 3 cannot say he was a great eonnoiseur of the purely artistic merits of a picture. •’
