STARTLING SENSATION.

ARREST OF A SUNNYSIDE WARDER. ON A CHARGE OF MURDER. [per press association.] Christchurch. July 26. Joseph Martin Chapman, warder of Sunnyside Mental Hospital, aged 36. was arrested to-day. on a charge of hax ing murdered Charles Thomas McMeekin. an inmate of the institutloj. McMeekin was a married man. aged 12, who died on July 9th, and in the ordinary course an inquest was lie Id at Sunnyside concerning MeMeekin’s death. ii is stated that the authorities were not satisfied and conducted further inquiries, the results of which were to-day handed to the police. In the interval, no suggestion of anything wrong' was allowed to leakout. McMeekin, whose family resides at Prebbleton. was said to have died rather suddenly, but there was nothing to suggest death from other than natural causes. The arrest of Chapman, therefore, has caused a considerable sensation.
