TEACHERS’ SALARIES.
DEPUTATION TO MR. BROWN
A deputation consisting of Messrs. W. G. Martin (Port), J. X. Dodds (Napier South), H. Speight (Petane), J. Williamson (Taradale), and J. Heslop (Napier Alain), representing the school teachers of Hawke’s Bay, waited upon Mr. J. Vigor Brown, M.P., at the Borough Council Chambers this morning to request his assistance to get the salaries of teac?iers increased.
Air. Martin introduced the deputation. and Alessrs Dodds and Hislop spoke at considerable length, pointing out that the salaries paid teachers were not at all in keeping with the exacting nature of the service required from them. Teachers, it- was stated, were paid lower salaries than any other Government servants. The teaching profession called for men ot high character and considerable ability, and therefore should be properly rewarded. Alessrs. Williamson anrr "peight also warmly suported the proposals, the latter saying that what they wanted more than increase of salaries was a. proper system of promotion.
Air. Brown replied most sympathetically, and promised to put the wishes of the teachers before the House, but he foresaw difficulties in the way of getting prompt recognition of their claims.
