I A special meeting of tho Committee (of the Society for the Prevention oi 1 Cruelty to Animals was held to-day to i consider a motion brought forward by i Mr. Snowball to rescind the resolution ' of June 3rd t otake steps to prosecute ' ihose engaged in the practice of plump- ' ton coursing, and substitute therefore ; a resolution that whilst the practice oi i coursing within enclosuresshould not ' He encouraged th» committee considers ; that it is inadvisable tor it to institute 1 proceedings against persons who take ■ part in plumpton coursing, as it recog- > nised that were it to do so it could j not consistently refrain from institut- ‘ ing similar prosecutions against persons j who engage in the sports of angling, I deer-stalking, shooting of our native I fauna, etc., and it is obvious that such ! action would militate seriously against > the usefulness of the society in its legiti- ; mate functions. The first part of the j motion (to rescind the previous resolui ti'jii) was carried, and the second part j was withdrawn in favour of the folI lowing amendment by the Rev. Mr. i Saunders: “That this committee, while | not prepared to prosecute for cruelty j those w ho take part in plumpton cours- : ing. expresses its emphatic opinion I that such coursing is a. heartless and i unworthy form of sport, and therefore ’ hopes to see it speedily abandoned. j
