FARTHING DAMAGES.
AWARDED TO WOOTTON. [PRESS ASSOCIATION- COI’VKIGHT. j (Received 24, 9 a.m.) London, July 23. The verdict in the Wootton v. Siever case was given for plaintiff, damages one fathing. AN UNCLEAN BUSINESS. (Received 24, 11.3'1 a.m.) London, July 23. In the Wootton-Siever ease. Mr. Marshall Hall, on behalf of the "Winning Post,” said that AA ootton had done everything he could to conceal the fact that he had several banking accounts and sent large blocks of money to Australia. Jockeys would not call their souls their own ; they were promised a thrashing if they did not do as they were told. The stable was run on commercial lines, hence Wootton’s opportunity of perpetrating fraud on the public.
Air. F. Smith, on behalf of Woolton, declared that Siever was animated by malice. He poured out a volume of filthy insinuations bemuse Wootton had refused to give him information. Siever himself had been warned off the turf. When members of the alleged ring gave evidence they were not even cross-, tamined regarding pulling six years ago. Siever then made no complaints to the stewards, instead of which he wrote denouncing Wootton’s detractors. Air. Justice Darling, summing up, suggested that the increase of fouls was possibly due to riding with shorter stirrups. The jury returned the following verdict Words not true in substance or fact, and not fair and honest comment, but published without malice.’’
Judgment was entered up with costs.
