ENGLISH SOCIETY TO ASSIST" LONELY SETTLER. Amid laughter and applause, Mrs. Mildmay, wife of an English M.P., described a real life romance at a reception given by Sir Philip and lady Waterlow in London m aid of the Girl’s Aid Branch of the Friends of the Poor, feho said that- some time since a letter was received from a man in Canada, who wrote to Miss Collin, the- secretary ot tho society, saying that he hoped he was not troubling them in asking theyi tn find him a wife. (Laughter.) ‘‘l want a partner,” the writer continued. I do not care how humble, so long :is she can cook a dinner. lam tired of Hoiking only for myself ,rnd there- are hundreds of other bachelors out here like me. I want a nice steady girl as I know there are thousands of them in Old England.” (Laughter and" applause.) Mis. Mildmay said that they at once lottnd a girl in their organisation who was suitable, and she was ready to go, and if inquiry proved that the man’s references were satisfactory, she hoped that the pair would soon be married and “ live happily ever after.” (Applause.) Airs. Mildmay explained that rim object of the society was to get boys p.nd girls into permanent work, not temporary employment, like the man who, when* asked what he was, said he was " a picker.” risked to further explain, ■he said ho picked fruit in the summer, hops in the. autumn, pockets in the winter, and oakum in the spring.” (Loud laughter.)
