HOCKEY.

HAWKE'S BAY ASSOCIATION. ANNUAL TOURNAMENT. The attendance tit the Hawke’s Bay Hockey Association’s annual tournament held on Cornwall Park, Hastings, yesterday numbered close on one thousand people. The entries in the various competitions although not so numerous as in pevious tournaments. were satisfactorily large, and the spectators were treated to some excellent games. Excepting in the junior grade, there were no easy victories, and many of the teams were so evenly matched that neither side wore able to score, and at the close of the day the finals in one of the competitions remained to be decided at some future date. In all, twenty-five teams competed, including representatives from Otanc and Waipawa. St. Matthew’s Club established a something like a unique record by winning three of the four competitions, whilst they have a good chance of also annexing the ladies’ championship, in which they are left in the final with Napier. The general arrangements were excellent. The matches succeeded one another without the slightest hitch, a matter for which much credit is due to Mr. K. Winehcombe, who discharged the duties of secretary in a business like and courteous manner. Concluding results : — MEN’S SENIOR A GRADE. Third Round. Albion White (1) beat Napier (0). St. Matthew’s (3) beat Athletic (0). Fourth Round. (Semi-final). St. Matthew’s (2) beat Mercantile (0). Albion a bye. Final. The final between Albion Whites and St. Matthew’s was won by St. Matthew’s after an exciting game, by 1 to 0. The defeat of the crack Albion team, winners in this grade at four previous tournaments, came as something in the way of a surprise, but St. Matthew’s were in fine fettle, and deserved their victory. MEN’S SENIOR B. Fohrth Round. (5) beat Mercantile (1). Final. St. Matthew’s beat Kohinoor. MEN’S JUNIOR. Final. St. Matthew’s (6) beat Y.M.C.A. (0). Only two teams entered in this grade, and St. Matthew’s defeated Y.M.C.A. in two successive games. LADIES’ SENIOR. Third Round. St. Matthew's (1) beat Hiiia (0). Napier (I) beat Albion (0). » The final in this competition will be played when the teams met in die ordinary competitions, on June 21st.
