POET LAUREATE DEAD.
(Received 3. 10.20 a.m.) London, June 2. Alfred Austin, the Poet Laureate, is dead. Alfred Austin. Poet Laureate since 1-596, was born at Headinglev’. Leeds, May. 1535. He was the second son of -.'dr. Joseph Austin, a merchant and Magistrate of the borough ol Leeds. He was educated at Stoueyhurst and (Jscott. and graduated at the London University in 1853. He was admitted barrister at the Inner Temple m 1557. and attended the York asdzi-s and West Riding sessions for three yens, but with no intention of remaining at the Bar. On the death of his father in 1861 he. devoted himsdf to foreign travel end literature. When in England he livcfl always in the country, four wars at liertf< rdshire, and afterwards at Swinford Old Manor, Ashford. Knit. Included in his publications are-:—-Randolph : a Talc of Polish Grief. 15.W: The Season: a Satire. 1861 ; bis ether poetical works published in the following order, are The Golden Age, Interludes, donna’s Child.
