DISASTERS AT SEA.
TURAKINA’S CARGO.
GOOD SALVAGE WORK. Sydney, March 13. The captain of the Turakina has cabled the Underwriters’ Association that he has landed in good condition 4500 bales of wool, 1000 bales of flax, 3000 cases of cheese, 200 casks of tallow, and 1000 cases of sundries. REFLOATED. THE KOWHAI DOCKED. Dunedin, March 13. Salvage operations on the Kowhai which was badly damaged at the heads yesterday morning, were continued throughout last night. The suction dredge 404 was got ready as soon as possible, the powerful salvage pumps recently imported for the new tug being fitted cn her. She then groped her way through the darkness to the Kowhai. and pumping operations were started a little later. The pump, which has a lift capacity of about TB.OOO tons per hour, steadily gained on the water, but as the water was still freely rushing into the vessel the were suspended to permit a diver to" go down. The Kowhai was resting on sand, and the diver had practically to burrow his way under her, but he managed to place a large pad over the gash, which was about three feet long and about half that width. Pumping was resumed at 3 p.m.. when the tide was high, and was completed in half an hour, after which the Kowhai was towed to Port Chalmers and docked.
An inquiry into the mishap will be held by the Collector of Customs tomorrow afternoon.
