ENFORCEMENT OF Obligations.

Christchjfreh. March 12. The Education Department’s proposal bearing on the conditions of free tenure and the defence regulations came before the North Canterbury Education Board to-day, when the following report was received from the Normal School and Technical Committee :—

“The Normal School and Technical Committee report that they have carefully considered the department’s memo bearing on the conditions of free-piace tenure and the defence regulations, the following resolution having been agreed to: ‘That the board point out to the department that in its opinion the en forcenient of obligations under lhe Defence Act does not come within its proper jurisdiction, and that therefore the board respectfully declines to take any action that may prejudice tlie rights of pupils to receive the. advantages of national education.’ ” Air. C. A. C. Hardy moved as an amendment, “That the clause be struck out in order to move that the letter be received.” Air. C. Andrews seconded the amendment. A letter wits received from Air. J. Studholme .stating that the request of the Assistant-Inspector-General was a most reasonable one.

The amendment, on being put to the meeting, was carried. Upon the motion of Mr. Hardy, the letter was received, as was also the letter from Mr. E. E. Shadbolt, secretary of the North Canterbury Labour Representation Committee prot ('-.ting imain'-t the Education Department’s proposal.
