was also given by Mr. McCartney in the shape of a Monte Christon fire dive. He was fully clothed and then tied inside of a sack on the' outside of which were strung strings of crackers and the like. In the evening the Gisborne swimmers entertained tlmi:- guests at a smoke concert. It was decided, io form a branch of the Royal Lim /Saving Society in the' town and Mr. E. Fenton was appointed secretary pro tern. A meeting will be held at a later date to elect i::e executive officers and put the branch on a proper working basis. On Bunday examinations in lifcsaving were conducted by Air. McCartney on behalf cf the Hawke t Bay Centre. There we’-e a largo number of entrants. As a result of the day’s examinations seven awards were granted. In tho afternoon another exhibition of lifesaving was given in the surf and attracted much attention. Though the sea was rough the men got through thoir work promptly ana satisfactorily. Altogether the visitors • spent a very enjoyable time and as a result of their visit it is expected that swimming will benefit greatly. The Gisborne swimmers are very keen and later on it is .hoped to pay periodical visits to Napier and engage in friendly competition with the men there.
