Serious delays have occurred recently in the telegraphic services which the operators attribute to the working of the new schedule. WHEAT STACKERS' STRIKE. Adelaide, Dee. 23. The wheat stackers' strike continues. The farmers are stacking their own grain. MERCHANT SERVICE AWARD. (Received 24. 9.45 a.m.) Sydney. Dee. 2-1. The High Court recently declared invalid the award obtained bv the Merchant Service Guild of Australasia on the ground that no dispute could be considered extending beyond the limits of one State. An acute position has arisen, as the old State award of N.S. Wales has expired, the result being that the captains and officers of both N'.S. Wales and South Australia are without a legal award covering the conditions of employment. The coastal shipowners of N.S. Wales recently intimated they were willing to meet the guild in conference, the guild replied agreeing provided the wages and conditions were discussed.
The shipowners have net replied. The guild believes it possesses the moral and active support of the seaside unions. TROUBLE WITH FIREMEN. Auckland, Dec. 23. The trouble with the firemen on the vessels trading round the New Zealand coast seems to be increasing. The firemen signing on the cable steamer Iris to-day for the trip to Norfolk Island demand £1 per day. This was refused, am! .after great trouble the captain secured the twenty men required at the award rates. MARINE ENGINEERS' DISPI. TE. Wellington. Dec 23.
