TRAINING ShABLES AT HASTINGS. RACEHORSE BURNT T( • DEATH. The Hastings firebell sounded a vigorous alarm about five minutes pest eight o'clock last evening, th< cause being an outbreak of fire :r some training stables situate behind the reside nee of Mr. Leslie Carrick, hors ■ trainer. Oliphant read. The members of the Fire Brigade and Fire Ppliee were quickly on the scene, but in the absence of a supph of water thev were unable to render anv material assistance. V\ ith the aid of the chrmic.il engine, however, thev were abi< to stem the progress of the flames in the direction of a macrocarpa hedge and Mr. Carrick's bouse.

The building, which consisted of five loose-boxes, feed room ano rtnble lads’ whares. was burned to the ground, a considerable amount rf feed as well as the contents of the wham, saddles, etc., also beinr •< - in the flames. When the out break occurred there were four racehorses in the loose-boxes, and they wore promptly driven out into th< open. One of them, however, became maddened with fright ami rmhe l back into the burning stable and all efforts to rescue it pruting futile, the unfortunate animal was burnt to death. The horse was th< two-vear-old Bungeebah (Stronghold —The Brat), and was the property ul Mr. Rangi Kerehoma. the well-known Native sportsman, who resides in Uc-llinge road. Mr. Carrick, who is private trainer to Ktrehoma, states that he fed the horses about 7.30 last evening, antsoon after retired to bed. About 6 o'clock he heard one of the horse: k'eking. and on getting up to sec what was wrong, he found an empty icese box on fire. He gave t'ne alarm, but the building being a very old one. the fire made rapid progress, and in a very short time the whole place enveloped in flames.

The cause of the outbreak is unknown. but the place being infested with rats it is suggested that the rodents may have carried matcher frr-m the wham.

Neither the building or horse were -overed hv insurance.
