Cigarette-smoking on the part of jouths was strongly condemned by fudge Docker in the District. Court at Sydney last week. The father of a 'ad was proceeded against b.v the man to whom the boy was apprenticed on account of his rot fulfilling the conditions of his apprenticeship. In support of the detenee. ii was said the boy was sent on errands at times. “This was part of his apprenticeship.” said his Honour, “and no doubt it gave ths lad an opportunity to smoke. The habit had a great hold upon the lad, and one has only to keep one’s eyes open to see what the results are. Cigarettes contain nicotine, which is very useful to some dispositions. Those who are excitable get soothed by it. and j those who are not are made dull and listless, causing them to put off till j to-inorrow what they should do to- • day. I have no doubt that the smok- i ing habit, which this young lad cou-i traded at an early age. has had aj treat deal to do with his nnsatisfac-! :ory work, and it is a gient pity that j .lis father, who is a non-smoker, did i rot deal firmly with the boy.” Juclg-1 nert went against the boy’s father.;
