NEW ZEALAND TELEGRAMS.

LAST NIGHT S XEAVS. Towards midnight % on Saturday th? barque Triton, which, arrived at Dunedin yesterday, was signalled by the Terra Nova and asked tc stand by until a boat came alongside When the boat arrived it contained a stowaway from the Terra Neva, a request bring made to land him at Dunedin. The doctors of Invercargill, acting in unanimity, have resigned, then position as lodge doctor’s cf the town’s friendly societies. The doctors desire that their agreement with the societies be brought into line with those existing elsewhere ir New Zealand, and that the major operations be not included as forming part of a lodge doctor s duties. The present agreement between the friendly societies was made thirty years ago. The crux c f the present dispute is that medical men wisl operations to be paid for. and thi'the lodges have refused to concede. The result is that the ledge surgeons have given throe months’ notice. The agreement which at present cb tains is, from a medical man’s pom; cf view, decidedly inferior to th.".; existing in any other part cf the Dominion.

A legal opinion on the Barmaids' Registration Amendment Act cf last session is that the Act is just- as faulty as the measure it amended, in that while it purports to prevent the employment cf unregistered barmaids in private bars it fails entire ly to do so. This failure is said tc be due to the fact that no such place at a private bar is known to the law. Recently the secretary of thr Hotcl Employees’ Federation wrote to the Minister of Justice stating that unregistered girls were stil. employed in private bars. The Minister was asked either to put the Act / into operation or. if it were really defective, to have the posit’cn tested. The Hon. A. L. ll< rd man has just replied that the- Com niissioner cf police lias been instructed to place the uhole matter before the Crown Law Officers fo; consideration and report.
