GROWING ANXIOUS.

Tlie success which has attended the inner harbour movement lately- has caused a good deal of anxiety to a few of the old breakwater “die hards.” On Saturday a requisition was sent to the President of the Chamber of Commerce as follows :—

‘That considering there are grave doubts as to the practicability of Messrs. Keele and Cullen’s scheme for an inner harbour at Napier, and that the ratepayers of the Napier Harbour Board district are not prepared to provide funds for such proposal, this meeting respectfully requests the Minister of Public Works to proceed with the railway embankment across the inner harbour as originally proposed by the Government engineer.” The anxious ones were Messrs. C. H. Granby, Robt. L. Paterson, J. H. Ritchie, R. Penrose. J. E. Gleadow. John McVay and R. ■ Bishop. President Herdman, howlever, has his head screwed on the | right way, and he was not going t<: allow the chamber to be made use of for any such purpose, and he expressed his intention of calling the meeting as provided by the rules, but he would not put any such resolution before the meeting. Such being the case the anxious ones withdrew their request, and the meeting : will therefore not be called. ObviousAy Mr. Herdman has acted rightly in i this respect. By what privilege Messis. Cianby, McVay ard Co. claim the right to speak for the district. and tell the Minister what the people will or wi.l not do 1 What ■ good could be expected from the | chamber throwing itself at the I rln oat of the Haibour Board and staking unjustifiable means of frus- ‘ irating that body’s woik. The Na- ! pier Chamber < f ('iiinineiir- io be of .'any use to this district must not be p.ised for parti nan intrigue, and Mr. I Herdman is to be congratulated upon I the firm ami sensible stand he has ' t aken.
