TRAIN CROSSING DANGER
ANOTHER. NARROW ESCAPE. AT THE HASTINGS RAILWAY ; STATION. The danger which exists through p passengers for Hastings by the 9.15 •_ a.m. down country train having to n cross the main metals to reach the )- Hastings railway platform was once 1- again brought into prominent no- :: tiec this morning. A little girl about 1 seven years cf age had alighted - from the country train and started t to walk towards the platform, but ■ hesitated for some reason or other < when she was midway between the 1 plates. The mail train was steaming ‘ in. and as the girl was apparently f unaware of its approach, a fatal ac- •' eicient seemed unavoidable. Very fortunately, however, a number of r [ bystanders and Porter J. O’Hare, ” noticed the girl’s plight and ran to 1 her assistance. The porter promptly' 1 seized the child and held her against 1 ' the country train whilst the express; ! passed by. The escape was a very; close one. and serves to again illus- [ trati’. as has been pointed out to the : 1 [authorities from time to lime, the; ’ I danger which the -present state of: ! affairs entails. Such incidents as 1 .[the one recorded are becoming al’ ( - I too frequent, and the only wonder is; ; that there has not been loss of life: < through this death trap —it is noth-; ... i”.g more or less —before now. The; . i Minister for Public orks has pro-j - ! mised to visit Hawke’s Bay during! t I the recess and it is to be hoped that; j the matter will be brought under-’ his notice for reference to his col-j - r f’.m'citc. 1
