A donation of £l from Mr. Thomas [ Collins of Hastings towards the [Jack Benefit Fund is hereby acknowledged. A report was current in Napier this morning to the effect that Con-: stable Hainsworth of Gisborne had been assaulted and killed by a man whom he was taking in custody, but up to the time of going to press no confirmation of the report had been received. Inspector O’Donovan is at present in the Gisborne district. ,
