The adjourned inqueri ea cerni-ig , .he death of the illegiumAe male ] child of Mary Katlileen" Doran was resumed at the Hastings courthouse „ this morning before Mr. S. E. Me- : Carthy, coroner. Detective Butler conducted the ! proceedings on Ix li tlf of the police, and Mr. B. J Dolan appeared ■. n , behalf of the mother. Mary Kyle, wife of James Kyle, < f j Louie street, Hastings, gave eri . deuce that- in response to a message ' from Mnr-y Doran Hie visited her hi her bedroom at the Hastings Hotel, about 2 p.m., on Octiber lOlh. Miss Doran told her that, she was in trouble and flic child was under the. bed. It was born the day previously. Witness' bad not seen Miss Doran between August loth an ( October loth. She visited her again about 8 o’clock on the evening cf. October 10th. and told her that she did not: ’realise how ill she was and she had better have a doctor. Wil ;icss went for Dr. Nairn, and he subsequently attended Miss Doran. Annie Doran, sister of Mary Kathleen Doran, gave evidence that sh • was also formerly employed at *l>e Hastings Hotel. On Oetiber 9th about 1.30 she saw her sister in hei’ bedroom and she complained of feeling unwell. Witness suggested that it was influenza and got her a hoi water bottle. Her sist,'.-;-then laid down And when witness left the room her sister locked the door after her. Witness saw her sister again about 5.45 p.m. and sb? stated that she was feeling all right. Witness and her two sisters stayed with her from 7.30 p.m. till about Ut p.m., but were not told what. w;m 1 matter. Next morning she saw l.er about 6.45 and two three times before 11 a.m., wheu she asked tier to go for Mrs Kyle. When witness returned from the “Pictures” at 11 p.m. on tlie evening of 10th October, she heard for the first time that her sister bad had a child. Isabella Doran, sister of Mi'y Kathleen Doran, and recently employed at the Hastings Hotel, deposed that she saw her sister frequently on Wednesday. October 10th, and Thursday. October 11th but did not know or have any reason to believe that she was in trc-iibl:-. She was tc-!d about 9 p.m. m October 10th. Dr. Nairn gave evidence that be was ("illed to the Hastings Hotel .1 n Thursday, October 10t.Ii. and foii.ul Miss Doran looking pale and ill. She admitted giving birth to a child on die previous day. He had her removed io a ])i-iv;iti hospital. On the following day in company with Dr. Boxes- held a post e.x.'imination on the body of the child. It was a full time child, well developed, and there wore no external injuries. Tlie internal organs were healthy, but the condition i.f the lungs showed that the child had no! breathe I. There was nothing to suggest that, the child would net have liced li-ui it received proper attention. There was nothing to show that the child had an existence independent of •I s mother. If the umblic.nl cord prolapsed during birth, the birth might have been born dead, but if someone had been present to attend to it. it might have lived. The moth' r was well enough to attend the nqiiesi.
Dr. Boxer corrobe rat ed the evidence of Dr. Nairn. This concluded the evidence. Mr. Dolan said the mol her had suffered great mental and physi-a! pain. She did not think she could r.dil anything to the evidence given, ■i-ui did nut propose to tender herself a> a witness. Ihe c< rom-r rot ti reed a verdict, l.'liat Mary K ithlcen Doran, an unmarried woman, gave birth to an Illegitimate male child on October 9tb. 1912. but th< re was no pro of th.-it the child was born alite.
