N.S.W. TOTALISATOR. BILL. [PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT.] H (Received 8. 9.10 a.m.) Sydney. Nov. 8. In the Assembly Mr. Levien introduced the Totalisator Bill which provides for the granting of licenses for totes to any recognised racing club for a period of twelve months, the fee being £1 for every day for v which the license is issued, the clubs s to retain ten per centum of the 1 money paid to the machine. Within 1 a fortnight they must pay half the . commission deducted to the Colonial 5 Treasurer, the remaining half may 1 be expended on prizes and the up- > keep of the course. Proprietary s clubs using their own course need f spend only a quarter in prizes or up- - keep. All moneys, after the commission is deducted are to be paid dividends. One clause provides that racing clubs may use all means in their power to prevent bookmakers plying their calling on their courses. The selling to or purchasing for a minor, of a tote ticket, is to be made punishable by fine or imprisonment. The bill prohibits anyone from re--1 ceiving from another person money to invest, also anyone from acting as a tote agent on commission. INCOME TAX AND STAMP DUTIES. Air. Cann introduced an amending Income Tax Bill providing a collection of the tax from companies instead of from individual shareholders, and also the Stamp Duties Bill. He expects the latter will produce £200,000 revenue. A LABOUR SPLIT. RESIGNATION OF AIR. BEEBY. (Received 8, 9.40 a.m.) Sydney, Nov. 8. The morning papers announce a 1 split in the Labour camp, which will probably result in the early retire- 1 ment of Mr. Beeby, Minister for La- ‘ hour. The principal reasons given are his denunciation of the Referendum, and the offence he has given the unions by his administration of the industrial law. including his reI cent refusal of the Labour Council’s I request to eliminate the penal ? clauses of the Industrial Arbitration 1 Act and guarantee absolute prefer- ‘ ence to unionists. 1 The Labour Council has intimated to Air. Beeby that should he obtain Labour nomination at the next election, the Central Executive will not endorse his nomination.
THE GAS BILL
ITS EFFECT ON WORKERS. (Received 8. 10.0 a.m.) Sydney, Nov. 8. The Australian Gaslight Company has notified that unless the Assembly accepts the Council’s amendments to the Gas Bill, 200 employees will be discharged in a few days. If the amendment is adopted, the 200 recently discharged will be rc-cm-ploycd. .
